A fixture in Great Falls' Gibson Park, erected 68 years ago to promote liberty, was vandalized over the weekend.
Using green spray paint, somebody marred the front of the foundation of the Statue of Liberty replica, just below a plaque that explains its purpose.
The graffiti was reported at 12:24 p.m. Sunday.
Police are investigating.
The version of the statue in Great Falls, although smaller, mirrors the real statue in New York, her arm holding a torch in the air and a crown atop her head.
More than 200 mini Lady Liberties were erected across the country as part of the "Strengthen the Arm of Liberty" theme by the Boy Scouts of America's for the organization's 40th anniversary celebration in 1950.
The replica's are about 8.5 feet tall, not including the base, compared to the 151-foot-tall Statue of Liberty, which is 305-feet tall when the pedestal and foundation is included.
In Montana, statues were put up in Lewistown and Great Falls, where Lady Liberty is located in the park at Park Drive and 2nd Avenue North.
A plaque on the front of the statue in Great Falls reads: "With the faith and courage of their forefathers who made possible the freedom of these United States, the Boy Scouts of America dedicates this copy of the Statue of Liberty as a pledge of everlasting fidelity and loyalty. The Crusade to Strengthen Liberty. 1951."
France gave the original Statue of Liberty, dedicated Oct. 28, 1886, to the United States to celebrate the country's first 100 years as a nation. It commemorates the alliance between France and the U.S. during the Revolutionary War and represents friendship between nations and freedom from oppression.
