A Catholic statue depicting an appearance by Mary, the mother of Jesus, that has globe-trotted for more than 70 years will arrive in New Jersey this week and visit more than a dozen parishes, church officials said Wednesday.
The pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima will visit parishes in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union counties from Friday through May 31, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark said. The statue — which is from the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal — will stop at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on May 13 for a special commemoration in the middle of the New Jersey tour.
