CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- The High Point University men's soccer team fell 2-0 against the University of Virginia on Thursday night (Sep. 2) in the Panthers' third-ever trip to Klockner.

Zach Haines: "I feel sick for my guys. I've never seen anything like what we just saw in the first half. In the locker room after, I told them I'm every bit as proud of them tonight as I was after the big south final. And I mean it 100 percent. We were excellent in the first half before things beyond our control changed the game. Then for the entire second half, down to ten men, we held them to one shot on goal. At UVA, to do that tells me everything I need to know about our group. I'm incredibly proud of how we handled the situation tonight and the fight we showed. We are going to be better moving forward with all of the positives we will take from this experience."

The two sides were even at the start with HPU shutting down UVA opportunities in the early going.

In the fifth minute, a handball called on HPU leads to a UVA penalty kick. UVA scored to take a 1-0 lead.

In the tenth minute, MD Myers provided the offensive pressure for HPU early as he had a quality chance and had his shot saved. Myers and the Panthers kept the pressure on with a shot off of a corner that also just missed.

In the 24th minute, Alex Abril had a chance of his saved, the game stayed at 1-0. At that point, shots were even with each side having three.

Holden Trent made a save off of a UVA corner then came in quickly to keep the UVA lead at one.

The Panthers kept up the defensive intensity in the 34th minute as Brady Francher stood in front of a UVA scored hot to ensure the Hoos lead remained at one.

In the 39th minute of the game, a penalty was called in the Panther box as a foul was called on Nick Phipps. Before the penalty kick, Trent was given a red card and was ejected from the contest. The Panthers then fell to ten men for the remainder of the game.

At that point, Ricardo Ceballos was called off the bench to play goalkeeper. The first task placed on his radar once he entered the game was a penalty attempt for UVA. Ceballos made a terrific save but was then called offsides and UVA was given an additional penalty kick attempt. The Hoos capitalized on the second opportunity and grew their lead to two.

Right before the end of the half in the 43rd minute, a third penalty was awarded to UVA as a foul was called on Cooper Lindfelt who fouled a Cavalier in the Panther box. Ceballos came up big to end the half as he made an outstanding save as the game remained 2-0.

HPU was able to hold UVA scoreless for the entire second half with only ten men after the red card in the 39th. HPU limited UVA to one shot on goal.

HPU was able to keep Virginia at 2-0 holding UVA scoreless for an entire second half down a man. Both UVA goals came off of penalty kicks. The Hoos would hold on to the 2-0 result.

Up Next: HPU returns to Vert Stadium for a Tuesday afternoon (Sep. 7) matinee with Cornell at 2:30. It will be the first meeting between the two sides.
