Mountain Hawks close weekend with four-set defeat to Toledo - Lehigh University Athletics

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Fifth year Hannah Wright brought the energy, registering 14 kills to cap a successful individual weekend, but Lehigh fell to Toledo in four sets (9-25, 17-25, 25-21, 19-25) to end the Virginia Tech Invitational. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 0-3 to start the 2021 season.
 
Lehigh took an early 4-1 lead in the first set, but the wheels started to fall off from that point as Toledo rattled off five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. From that point forward, the Rockets went on a ­19-5 run to take the first set 25-9.  Lehigh managed just four kills during the set with six errors, while Toledo hit .583.
 
Much like the first set, the Mountain Hawks pounced to a 7-2 advantage following three kills from Wright, but Toledo went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Lehigh fought back to bring it as close as six points at 19-13, but the Rockets rallied to win the set, 25-17 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
 
For the third straight match in the tournament, Lehigh found itself down two sets, looking to win three straight sets to claim the match. The Mountain Hawks started things off in the third by battling, going on an 8-4 run following four straight points. Leading 14-9, the Rockets cut the deficit to two after three points in a row, but Lehigh held tough to come away with the 25-21 win.
 
Lehigh led 9-8 to open the fourth, but Toledo went on another giant run, a 9-0 spurt, to move ahead 17-9. Three straight Hannah Wright kills had the Mountain Hawks within five points after trailing 24-14, but the Rockets used an Olivia Vance kill to come away with the 3-1 win.
 
Wright led the way with 14 kills, also adding two blocks and a dig. Sabrina Lancaster finished with eight kills while hitting .154 and Sophia Meagher had five kills and five blocks.
 
Sarah Burau took over most of the setter duties against Toledo, tallying 23 assists with five digs. Kyleigh Brown led the way with 12 digs, adding four assists.
 
Lehigh returns home next weekend to host the Lehigh Steel Tournament at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks host St. Francis Brooklyn at noon on Friday and Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Lehigh finishes out the weekend taking on Binghamton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
