Tazewell residents protest, calling for the relocation of confederate statue - WVVA TV

TAZEWELL VA. (WVVA) - On Saturday, some Tazewell residents gathered ON Main Street in Tazewell to hold a protest.

They are calling for the relocation of the confederate statue that stands in front of the courthouse.

Lasandra Thompson, the protest organizer, said for her and others the statue is a reminder of oppression.

"There are people here that this statue still represents slavery, it still represents slavery, it still represents the hardships and the horrendous terrors slaves went through at this time, even here in Tazewell," said Thompson.

Not everyone in Tazewell County feels that way. Daniel Embery, a Tazewell County resident, believes it should stay where it is because it represents the state's history.

"It's part of our history," said Embery. "If you go around taking all our statues down you erase history and I think you can learn more from history than if you erase our history what lesson can you learn."

By having the statue in front of the courthouse, Thompson feels it is being glorified, and she would like to see it moved somewhere else.

"I don't think we should honor it," said Thompson. "I think it should be put somewhere like a museum or a cemetery if you want to show its history but not on our judicial court steps where we're supposed to be equal individuals as soon as we walk in the door."

Only time will tell what will happen with the statue as relocating it will be on the ballot this November.

Thompson said despite it being up for a vote, she will be steadfast and hopes to hold more protests in the future.
