LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a quick turnaround, Duke field hockey could not overcome Louisville's two-goal third quarter as the Blue Devils dropped a 3-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium in a non-conference matchup.

The Blue Devils fall to 0-2 after opening weekend and 0-1 in ACC action while the Cardinals remain undefeated at 2-0.

"I couldn't be prouder of the energy they brought and to be on the front foot to put the game on Louisville – for in my opinion, the majority of the game," said head coach Pam Bustin. "What we have to do is finish our opportunities in the scoring circle and once we make a defensive stop, we need to get the ball back on our attack. We're young and it's going to take us some time to connect it all, but I can't believe the amount of growth we have shown in 24 hours."

After a nearly scoreless first half, Louisville's Erica Cooper tapped in the first goal of the game off a rebounded shot from Mercedes Pastor at 29:22. Nineteen seconds later, Duke responded as junior Noor van de Laar tied the game with the first Blue Devil goal of the 2020 season. Sophomore Hannah Miller drove inside the circle, sent the ball off a defender's leg, and van de Laar connected with the back of the cage.

Duke began the third quarter with a penalty corner in the 32nd minute as freshman Darcy Bourne ripped a shot, but the Cardinals' goalkeeper made the save. Bourne quickly got another look but sent the ball high. Louisville took back the lead with goals in the 33rd and 37th minutes (3-1).

The Blue Devils fought until the end as senior Lily Posternak garnered her first strike of the season, but it was deflected just wide of the cage in the 56th minute. Bourne took the final look for Duke in the 58th minute to finish with a team-high four shots.

In her second career game, freshman goalkeeper Piper Hampsch tallied a season-high six saves after facing 16 shots in the full 60 minutes of play.

Louisville outshot Duke, 16-10, with nine shots on frame and took nine corners to the Blue Devils' two.

The Blue Devils have a week until their next contest as Duke welcomes rival North Carolina for its first home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 4. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium and will be nationally televised on the ACC Network.
