CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Should schools close classrooms for the fall? The Cuyahoga County Board of Health is recommending schools stay remote.

And we’re debating virtual schooling on This Week in the CLE.

Listen online here.

Editor Chris Quinn hosts our daily half-hour coronavirus news podcast, with editors Jane Kahoun, Kris Wernowsky and me, answering all sorts of questions from the news.

Here are the questions we’re answering today:

1) What happens now that the Cuyahoga Board of Health has recommended all suburban school districts keep their buildings closed and their classes virtual? The board didn’t take questions, but cited data in several categories, including the average number of daily cases, capacity to test children, the number of cases and the state’s positivity rates. Cuyahoga’s 31 school districts will decide what to do for their students.

2) What is Gov. Mike DeWine’s strategy for halting the spread of the coronavirus among inebriated bar patrons without putting the bars out of business? He wants the Ohio Liquor Control Commission to consider limiting liquor sales statewide to 10 p.m.

3) How far back in time do we have to go to find homicides and gun violence like we are seeing this year, and what’s the cause of the rise? Cleveland’s deadliest year in the last decade was 2016, when 144 people were killed. That also came amid of social unrest following a string of police killings of unarmed Black men across the country. Some in law enforcement blame the rise in gun violence on the coronavirus.

4) Did Ohio House members listen to attorney general Dave Yost, or did they just take a simple vote to bounce Larry Householder as the house speaker, as they intended? And who’s the new speaker? The Ohio House of Representatives voted to remove Larry Householder as speaker in a 90-0 vote that required no debate, with 9 members, including Householder, absent. Republican State Rep. Bob Cupp, a former Ohio Supreme Court justice who’s served in the House since 2015, will replace him.

5) Why aren’t people wearing masks when they get together with friends and family for backyard barbecues and other gatherings? Health officials across the country are seeing small groups of family members and friends spreading the coronavirus, at parties and family gatherings, usually from infected people who don’t know they’re sick. As social animals, we’re just not wired to cover our faces or stay away from each other.

6) Why is Ohio Governor Mike DeWine getting involved in the controversial debate about hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug that is completely debunked as a coronavirus cure even though President Donald Trump keeps spreading misinformation to tout it. The Ohio Board of Pharmacy is heeding DeWine and holding off on a new rule generally banning hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as a coronavirus treatment. DeWine said he agreed with the FDA commissioner that the decision about the prescription should be between a doctor and patient.

7) Can the dad of someone who died of a fentanyl overdose get damages from the people who supplied the illegal drugs? An Akron father is trying to hold a Chinese drug supplier responsible for his son’s death.

8) With Cleveland hosting the first presidential debate during the pandemic, what are the health dangers and what needs to be done to keep people safe. Health experts say the same factors should be top-of-mind for this event as any gathering during COVID-19, like increasing sanitation, spacing people apart and examining ventilation to make sure air circulation doesn’t contribute to spread of the virus.
