Salisbury city leaders to introduce plan to relocate Confederate statue 'Fame' - WSOC Charlotte

SALISBURY, N.C. - The statue of an angel carrying a Confederate soldier known as "Fame" has been the center of controversy in Salisbury for years.

At Monday night's special meeting, the city attorney plans to present a memorandum about the city's role in relocating the monument.

The city said it can remove or relocate the statue because the land is owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The city granted them the land in 1908.

Over the years, people have tried to destroy the statue.

In 2017, a group of more than 400 people called "Salisbury Indivisible" asked city council to move the monument. They said it is a source of pain because it represents a history of slavery, oppression, and terror.

Then, people dumped paint on it in August and last March.

The NAACP and the group Women for Community Justice want the city to create a resolution opposing the statue.

The city will let people speak during a special public hearing Monday night from 6 to 8:15 p.m.

They are expecting so many people to show up they have moved the hearing to the Civic Center.
