After a weekend of protests, Oxford leaders say they haven’t discussed removing the Confederate statue that graces the courthouse lawn.
Saturday, approximately 100 people, members or supporters of Confederate 901 and the Hiwaymen, gathered at The Square in Oxford to celebrate the Confederacy. In response, they were met by approximately 50 counter protestors.
The statue on The Square is Lafayette County property, according to Kara Giles with the Oxford mayor's office.
The board of supervisors has not discussed removing the statue, said Jeff Busby, a county supervisor and the board's president.
"We just have no comment right now," Busby said. "There's a lot of things we'd have to look into as a board but we haven't discussed it."
Mayor Robyn Tannehill said "there are no confederate monuments located on City of Oxford property."
While the university got rid of their "Colonel Reb" mascot in 2003, a confederate statue still stands on campus at The Circle. Ole Miss officials did not return repeated calls and emails for comment.
While the protestors marched from The Square to The Circle, eight players of the Ole Miss basketball team took a knee during the National Anthem in their game against Georgia.
