There was one thing most people who addressed the City Council over last week's announcement about the statues of Don Diego de Vargas and the Pueblo runners could agree on: They weren't happy about it.
About two dozen people spoke during public comment at Wednesday's council meeting regarding the statues, all but one of whom said they took issue with some part of the plan to put both on display at separate locations.
In a May 23 news conference, Mayor Alan Webber, council members and local tribal leaders unveiled a plan for the statue of de Vargas, the Spanish governor who recaptured Santa Fe in 1692, to be placed at the New Mexico History Museum until a permanent location is found. The sculpture of two Native Americans who played a pivotal role in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 will be installed inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, Webber announced.
