Permission granted to obtain cast of monument of discoverer

After having been rumored for some time, it was definitely announced Dec. 13, 1922, that Dr. Andrew Anderson had completed arrangements for the presentation to the City of St. Augustine in the interest of city beautification, a replica of the statue of Ponce de Leon at San Juan, Puerto Rico, where rest the remains of the discoverer of Florida.

The generous benefactor to the city for some months been working on his contemplated plans of creating a Ponce de Leon Park opposite the old market place and in the space now occupied by the comfort station.

Dr. Anderson communicated with President Harding in an effort to obtain from the governor of Porto Rico permission that would allow the Gorham Manufacturing Company of New York to obtain a plaster cast of the monument. The matter was referred to Secretary of War Weeks and to expedite matters, the following cables were exchanged and are made public:

“Governor of Puerto Rico:

Dr. Andrew Anderson desires consent Puerto Rico government to send expert to San Juan to make plaster cast statue of Ponce de Leon at San Juan in order to present replica to City of St. Augustine, Florida. President Harding expresses hope that request may be granted. Please rush answer by cable.

Secretary of War.”

The governor’s answer was as follows:

“Referring to telegram from your office of 6th instant, request of Dr. Andrew Anderson to make plaster cast statue of Ponce de Leon granted.”

Dr. Anderson has photographs of the statue which is most lifelike and appropriate for the city where the Spanish adventurer's fleet first touched down.

Dedication may occur during celebration

The Secretary of War has been requested to furnish proper credentials to the manufacturing firm as soon as possible and the work will be rushed with the hope that the park will have been created in time for dedication during the Ponce de Leon Celebration which will be held in the city April 4th, 5th and 6th, 1923.

The city has already commenced the work of clearing the part and arranged to move the comfort station to the county bridge office and the alligator pool east of the seawall.

Announcement as to the arrangement of St. Augustine’s new civic beauty spot is expected within a few days. It is said the new park will surpass Anderson Circle, which was donated to the city last year.
