However, it's a homestand with a twist as the Knights are playing home games at two different arenas. On Thursday, the Knights will move to the KFC Yum! Center to host the Asbury Eagles at 7 p.m. Twenty-four hours later, Bellarmine will back in Freedom Hall to take on the Midway Eagles.
The change in venues was necessitated to free up Freedom Hall for use by the NCAA Volleyball Regional Tournament, hosted by the No. 1-seeded Louisville Cardinals. A scheduling conflict with the KFC Yum! Center prevented the University of Louisville from using it as a host site, so an arrangement was made with Bellarmine to share Freedom Hall for the week. As part of the schedule shake-up, the Bellarmine-Asbury game was moved from Saturday to Thursday and relocated to the KFC Yum! Center.
To encourage fans to follow the Knights to the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday, Bellarmine is offering free general admission tickets and providing Bellarmine season ticket holders preferred seating. In addition, parking in the Witherspoon Garage will be complimentary.
While the Knights will be playing in a different space on Thursday, they'll be playing on the same surface. Less than an hour after the Bellarmine women's game against Evansville wrapped up on Tuesday night, work crews began disassembling the Knights' Park Community Credit Union Court for re-location to the KFC Yum! Center. The process will be reversed following Thursday's Bellarmine-Asbury game.
In terms of the competition, the Knights will be returning to play after romping past Franklin College 92-43 on Sunday afternoon as four players registered double-digit games, led by Dylan Penn's 15 points. The senior guard enters this weekend's play as the ASUN leader in assists at 5.1 per game and is fourth in the league in scoring at 16 points a game.
Fellow guards CJ Fleming and Juston Betz also have had solid starts to the 2021-22 season. Fleming is averaging just over 10 points a game and is closing in on becoming the 42nd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. He enters the Asbury contest with 961 career points. Betz, meanwhile, is leading the team in rebounding at 5.4 per game and is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.8 per contest.
Asbury, which is in its first year at the NCAA Division III level, comes in 4-6 on the year and winner of its last three games. The Eagles' 78-71 victory over Boyce on Saturday gave Coach Will Shouse career win number 223 to make him the winningest coach in program history.
Shouse's squad is being led by Shelbyville native and Collins High School graduate Nick Fort, who is averaging 19 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. The 6-5 forward also leads the team in assists at 2.1 per game. Eric Powell, a junior guard from Lexington Lafayette High School, adds 14.5 points a game while freshman Clayton Winter is hauling in 9.7 boards per game.
Thursday's game will mark just the second time Bellarmine and Asbury have met on the hardwood. The first meeting was a 98-72 win for Bellarmine on Jan. 27, 1997 in Knights Hall.
Midway's men's program is still relatively young, with its first season coming in 2016-17. (Midway was established as women's-only college and did not become fully coeducational until 2016.)
Bellarmine hosted Midway in each of the Eagles' first two seasons with the Knights winning 98-52 on 12/10/16 and 93-49 on 12/9/17.
This year, the Eagles have gotten off to a 6-4 start thanks largely to Donnie Miller's 22.2 points per game average. The sophomore guard leads four double-digit scorers for the Eagles, who are putting up more than 86 points per game as a team.
That per game average is greatly enhanced by a 157-point effort against Greenville, who scored 135 in the game at Georgetown College. Raekwon Evans poured in 45 points for the Eagles in that contest with Nick Keeton adding 35 on 16-of-17 shooting. Midway was certainly "Eagle-eyed" in the game, making 72 of 96 field goal attempts for 75 percent shooting.
