NIU (1-4) is returning to action for the first time since Monday (Nov. 22) when the Huskies fell to Little Rock, 67-60, in Jacksonville, Fla. Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook, Ill./Iowa Western CC) scored a career-high 15 points against the Trojans while Zool Kueth (Gallatin, Tenn./Pratt CC) added 12 points on four triples.
Six different players scored in double figures in NIU's two games in Jacksonville as Thornton and Kueth were joined in double figures by Trendon Hankerson (Novi, Mich./Novi), who scored in double figures in both games. Darweshi Hunter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Weber State), Chinedu Kingsley Okanu (Lynwood, Ill./Vincennes University) and Keshawn Williams (Chicago Heights, Ill./Tulsa) scored in double figures in the first game against Boston University.
The Golden Eagles enter Saturday's contest with a 5-1 overall record. Marquette finished second in the Charleston Classic, topping Ole Miss and West Virginia before falling in the final to St. Bonaventure. Two players are scoring in double figures for Marquette, led by 17.7 points per game from Justin Lewis, who also leads the Golden Eagles with 8.5 rebounds per game. Darryl Morsell also scores in double figures at 17.3 points per contest. Shaka Smart is in his first season as head coach at Marquette.
NIU and Marquette are meeting for the ninth time on Saturday night, with the Golden Eagles holding a 6-2 edge in the all-time series. The program's have met just once since 1993, a 79-70 Marquette victory on Dec. 18, 2017.
Following Saturday's contest, the Huskies will return home for the first time during the regular season as they host Eastern Illinois on Wednesday night, Dec. 1. Tip time against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
