MINNEAPOLIS — Authorities in Minneapolis deployed tear gas and used flashbangs to get demonstrators in the city to disperse as an 8 p.m. curfew went into effect on the fifth night of protests over the death of 46-year-old George Floyd.

According to reports, a veteran photojournalist with WCCO — Tom Aviles — as arrested by Minnesota State Patrol on Saturday despite identifying himself as a member of the press. Another reporter, MSNBC's Ali Velshi, said he was hit in the leg by a rubber bullet and said the state police and the National Guard fired "unprovoked" into a peaceful rally.

Another reporter, KSTP's Ryan Raiche, said he, his photographer and his producer wear tear gassed and pepper sprayed despite identifying themselves as members of the media.

On Friday, CNN reporter Omar Jimenezwas seen getting arrested live on air. Members of Jimenez's camera crew were also put into handcuffs, reported CNN. They have since been released.

Photos and videos showed protesters near the city's fifth police precinct, where authorities used tear gas to get a crowd to disperse though the protest appeared to be peaceful in nature, according to reports. The tougher tactics came after city and state leaders were criticized for not forcefully enough confronting days of violent and damaging protests that included protesters burning down a police station shortly after officers abandoned it.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz asked residents in the Twin Cities to stay home on Saturday while the state's National Guard said some thousands of soliders were in the area. Walz had suggested that many of the protesters have come from outside Minnesota's borders and include white supremacists, anarchists and members of drug cartels.

The overwhelming number of protesters have made it impossible to make "coherent arrests," he said.

While Walz made the claim that many of the protesters have come from outside, a review of jail records by local news station KSTP found that the majority of those arrested during the demonstrations are from Minnesota.

In a further effort to limit demonstrations, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said they planned to close down major highways into and around the Twin Cities metro area. The move comes as state leaders are concerned about groups from out of the state coming into Minneapolis and St. Paul to cause further destruction.

Here are the highway closures that went into effect at 7 p.m.:

  • I-35W north/south between I-694 & Highway 62
  • I-35E north/south between Highway 36 & Highway 62
  • I-94 east/west between I-694 & the I-694/I-494 interchange
  • I-394 east between Highway 100 & I-94
  • Highway 55 north/south between Highway 62 & I-94
