Letters: ICE raids make mockery of statue’s inscription - Fort Morgan Times

On the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York’s harbor are inscribed these words from Emma Lazarus’s sonnet “The New Colussus”, written in 1883: “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearing to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” It was the carrying out of the mandate of these words that helped make America great.

What we see going on today in the suffering of innocent children being held in over-crowded detention centers while separated from their families, and terror that is generated by ICE roundup raids makes a mockery of the statue’s inscription. It would seem that responsible politicians not locked into polarized positions should be able to come up with better answers to the problem.
