Flash flooding and a mudslide closed roads in Killington on Friday, including Route 4, the primary east-west thoroughfare in the region.
Jim Haff, a Killington selectboard member, estimated “well over a million dollars worth of damage.” A mudslide “about 15 feet high” came across Route 4 just past Mission Farm Road, Haff said.
East Mountain Road from about Foster Farm Road to Route 4 had also sustained significant damage from flooding, according to Haff. The road closure stranded several dozen cars near the Sunrise Mountain Village, Haff said, but people were moving around as needed.
“It’s just like Irene over there,” he said, referring to the tropical storm that tore through Vermont in 2011.
According to Killington Police, traffic on Route 4 was being diverted using Mission Farm Road as of Friday night. Haff guessed Route 4 would be open again after lunchtime on Saturday.
Thunderstorms damaged roads and other infrastructure across Windsor and Rutland counties. Route 14 in Royalton near Vesper Road was temporarily closed Friday afternoon “due to road flooding,” state police said.
Just south of Killington, Cold River Road in Shrewsbury near Keiffer Road was closed in the early Saturday morning hours “due to powerlines being down as well as trees being on fire,” state police said in a press release. “Specific details are not yet available,” police wrote at 12:20 a.m.
In Killington, Haff said workers from Casella, Mosher Excavating, and Fiore Property Services and Excavation were assisting with clean up. He also said state officials were on the scene.
